About The University

The University of Connecticut is the state's flagship institution of higher learning. Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut includes 10 Schools and Colleges at its main campus in Storrs, separate Schools of Law and Social Work in Hartford, five regional campuses throughout the state and Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at the UConn Health Center in Farmington.

The University spans 4,104 acres at its main campus in Storrs and five regional campuses, and an additional 162 acres at the UConn Health Center in Farmington. The University of Connecticut is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

UConn is renewing, rebuilding and enhancing its campuses through an unprecedented $2.8 billion, 20-year state investment in the University’s infrastructure. State-of-the-art facilities grace every campus.

The University of Connecticut is a school of choice for academically talented students. For nine years, UConn has stood as the top public university in New England. Applications for enrollment have nearly doubled in ten years and now approach 21,000 anually. The University recently welcomed more than 100 high school valedictorians and salutatorians to UConn’s Class of 2010.

University Traditions

The School Mascot

Husky DogThe University mascot is a Husky dog, named “Jonathan,” after Connecticut’s Revolutionary War-era governor, Jonathan Trumbull. The current mascot (all have been white), is Johnathan XII. A costumed mascot inspires Husky spirit at UConn athletic events and other campus activities.

University Song

The words to UConn’s school song, Alma Mater, also known as Old Connecticut, were written by University alumna Alice Sawin Davis, Class of 1925.
